Talks entered new, intensified phase today
President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu met today to jumpstart the new intensified phase of UN-led direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem.
Following the meeting, which lasted four and a half hours, UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus, Liza Buttenheim, stated that today’s meeting was one of the four which will be focussed on governance and power sharing.
“The meeting took place in a positive atmosphere. The leaders discussed core issues under this chapter which will continue at the next leader’s meeting on Friday July 29”, she noted.
Mrs. Buttenheim also pointed out that the leaders agreed that ensuring confidentiality regarding their discussions during this intensified phase of the talks, is a precondition for achieving progress.
She mentioned that UN Secretary General`s Special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer will be returning to the island next week and will be present at next Monday’s meeting, adding that the special representatives of the two leaders will have a meeting on Thursday morning to discuss one of the issues that was raised this morning.
President Christofias and Mr. Eroglu will hold their next meeting on Friday, July 29.
