EU Commissioner for Enlargement welcomes efforts for Cyprus settlement
EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fuele, welcomed the efforts of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus and the United Nations to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem reiterating the European Commission`s strong support for the settlement talks.
Following his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu on Tuesday in Brussels,Mr. Fuele stated that he and Mr. Eroglu discussed the recent meeting in New York between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities, as well as issues related to the financial aid program for the Turkish Cypriot community and the crossing of persons and goods across the Green Line in Cyprus which separates the island’s northern Turkish occupied areas from the Government controlled part of the country.
To this effect, Mr. Fuele stated the following: "I welcomed the efforts of the leaders of both communities and the UN to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. I also reiterated the European Commission`s strong support of the settlement talks. Mr. Eroglu and I discussed the way ahead after the recent tripartite meeting and the importance of reaching agreement on all internal aspects of a settlement by the next tripartite meeting in January 2012."
