Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis to Washington, D.C
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, arrived yesterday to Washington, DC in order to attend the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Global Forum 2012, World Leaders Plenary, which takes place between May 3 and 4.
The Foreign Minister addressed the Forum as one of the main speakers, which included the Foreign Ministers of Canada, Mr John Baird, and of Germany, Mr Guido Westerwelle, as well as the White House Chief of Staff, Mr Jacob Lew. In her speech, Dr. Markoullis attached special significance to the prospects of strategic cooperation with Israel for the creation of the necessary insfrastructure for the exploitation of hydrocarbons in ways that would be beneficial to peace, progress and prosperity for the entire region. This latest discovery, she emphasized, creates a new role for the country of Cyprus in the region and will work as a catalyst for the reunification of the island. Moreover, at the Forum, special video messages by the Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Greek Minister of National Defence, Mr Dimitris Avramopoulos, were screened.
Today, Dr. Marcoullis hosted a breakfast for the leadership of the Greek community in the USA and was later interviewed by major US print and electronic media publications, such as The Washington Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and CNN.
The Foreign Minister will return to Cyprus on Saturday, May 5.
