Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, on the passing away of Andrew Α. Athens, 15.03.13
It is with deep sorrow that I was informed of the passing away of one of the great friends of Cyprus, Andrew A. Athens. He was a great patriot who devoted his life to ceaselessly promoting and defending the core values and interests of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. He was instrumental to the creation of the Hellenic lobby in Washington after the Turkish invasion of 1974 and he never stopped fighting for the termination of the Turkish occupation and for the reunification of Cyprus. Faithful to the timeless principles and values of democracy, justice and freedom, he fought during the Second World War, where he distinguished himself by his bravery. His death leaves an irreplaceable void. I express my warmest condolences to his family and to the Greek Diaspora as a whole.
