New Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States appointed
George Chacalli, Cyprus’ newly appointed Ambassador to the United States, presented copies of his credentials to Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns during a brief welcome ceremony at the U.S. State Department on May 30. Mr. Chacalli, who was posted at the Cypriot Embassy in Washington earlier in his career, said it was an honor to return as his nation’s top diplomat in the United States. He will officially begin as Ambassador in July, after presenting his credentials to President Obama.
“It is wonderful to be back in Washington and renewing old friendships,” said Mr. Chacalli, who most recently was Cyprus’ Ambassador to Sweden from 2010 to 2013. “I am looking forward to deepening our partnership and expanding our circle of friends not just in Washington, but across America.”
