Press release on the occasion of Ambassador Chacalliís presentation of credentials to President Obama

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency George Chacalli, presented his credentials to President Barack Obama on July 18th, at the White House’s Oval Office.
Ambassador Chacalli referred to the excellent relations between the United States and Cyprus on the bilateral and multilateral levels and emphasized his commitment towards strengthening these bonds of friendship and co-operation further.
President Barack Obama referred to the long history of friendship between Cyprus and the United States, based on common values, goals and a mutual commitment to democracy and freedom and stated that together, the two countries can advance efforts to promote economic growth and human rights, confront terrorism and safeguard Cyprus’ cultural heritage.
President Obama confirmed the United States' support towards ongoing efforts, under the auspices of the United Nations, to reunify the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. He stated that the island's division has gone on for too long and recognized the hopes of the Cypriot government to end the division through a just and lasting settlement. He reaffirmed his country’s readiness to contribute to the efforts that will bring an end to the island’s tragic division.
