Finance Minister paid a working visit to Washington, DC
The Cyprus Finance Minister, Mr. Harris Georgiades, who was on a working visit to Washington DC (Dec 2-4), met with the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Jack Lew, with whom he discussed the current challenges facing the Cypriot economy, the overall progress of implementing the economic reforms contained in the MoU signed a few months ago with the Troika, as well as the efforts of the Cyprus Government for economic restructuring and fiscal consolidation.
The Cypriot Minister also met with members of the White House International Economic Security Team, with senior officials at the Department of State, as well as with the Chairmen and members of the House of Representatives Committees on Financial Services and Foreign Affairs, whom he briefed on the implementation of the economic reform program in Cyprus, the restructuring of the banking sector, and all other fiscal consolidation measures underway.
During his visit the Minister held meetings with IMF officials, during which the second assessment of Cyprus’s implementation of the terms of its economic program were discussed and views were exchanged on the way forward.
Minister Georgiades ended his visit with a lunch presentation at the Peterson Institute for Int’l Economics attended by investors, US Government officials and economic policy makers.
Mr. Georgiades, gave also an interview to CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, during which he stated that Cyprus has exited the danger zone and is beginning to take control of the situation. The latter, he stressed, is clearly reflected in the S&P's move to upgrade the nation's sovereign debt.
