The President of the Republic participates in the opening of the 69th Summit of the UN General Assembly
The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, participates in the opening of the 69th Summit of the UN General Assembly, in New York, during which speeches were made the first day (Sept. 24) by the President of the General Assembly and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, Mr Sam Kahamba Kutesa and the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon.
Following the normal practice, the general debate was opened by the President of Brazil, Mrs Dilma Rousseff, followed by the speech of the President of the United States, Mr Barack Obama.
Meanwhile, on Sept. 24 the President of the Republic had a meeting with the British Foreign Secretary, Mr Philip Hammond, with whom he discussed the Cyprus issue, issues pertaining to the EU and bilateral matters. He also had a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister, Mr Sergey Lavrov.
In the evening of that day, President Anastasiades met with the leading members of the Cyprus Federation of America, whom he briefed on the developments in the Cyprus problem and with whom he exchanged views vis-a-vis ways to improve cooperation between Cyprus and the overseas community in the US.
In the framework of his visit to New York the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, had separate meetings yesterday with the President of Egypt, Mr Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Mr Tamman Salam. The topics of discussion during the meetings were, inter alia, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the specific countries themselves, as well as the possibilities of EU assistance. President Anastasiades also briefed his interlocutors on the present phase of the Cyprus problem.
After the President’s meeting with his Egyptian counterpart a joint communique was issued, which reaffirms the strengthening of cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt.
Moreover, President Anastasiades had a meeting with the leaders of the World Jewish Congress, which was also attended by the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, Cyprus’ Ambassador to Washington D.C., Mr George Chacalli, and the Permanent Representative of the Republic to the UN, Ambassador Nicholas Emiliou.
In the evening, President Anastasiades and his spouse attended the reception hosted by the US President, Mr Barack Obama, in honour of the Heads of State and Government who are in New York for the UN General Assembly.
The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, continued his contacts yesterday in New York with the overseas organizations of the Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce and with members of the overseas organisation AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association). During the meeting with AHEPA its Chairman Philip Frangos gave President Anastasiades a cheque for $25,000 to be used for children`s foundations. The meetings focused on issues of cooperation and coordination between Cyprus and the overseas community.
Meanwhile, the President of the Republic had a meeting yesterday with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, during which they discussed matters pertaining to the Middle East with emphasis on the Palestinian issue, as well as ways for the EU’s more active involvement.
