Weston: There is a very good possibility for a just and durable settlement
Nicosia, Oct 30 (CNA) -- US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus
Tomas Weston said here today it is clear ''that we are having a period where
we really do have a very good possibility'' for a just and durable settlement to
the Cyprus problem.
Weston, who was received this morning by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, reiterated the US commitment ''to do everything we can do to assure a good outcome.''|
The US diplomat, leaving the island this afternoon, described his meeting with the President ''excellent as always'' noting that ''this was particularly a good one''.
''I think it's clear to all of us that we are having a period where we really do have a very good possibility to get what we've been working on for a long, long time which is a just and durable settlement to the division of the island,'' Weston added.
He noted that he leaves today for Germany ''with a greater sense of the possibilities in the period ahead and commitment to do everything we can, everything the US can do to assure a good outcome.''
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
