Larnaca, Nov 1 (CNA) ? Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides conveyed a message of support from the French government to Cyprus' efforts to accede in the European Union.

Speaking on his return yesterday evening from a working visit to Paris, Kasoulides said that from his contacts in France, he has become a "recipient" of the positive attitude of the French state to the island's accession course.

"In short, I convey the message that we have France's support to our accession to the EU on December 12", said the Foreign Minister.

He also noted that "as a permanent member of the Security Council, the French government is monitoring developments in Cyprus and surely understands our concerns and at the same time supports the UN Secretary General's efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, an effort which should comply with Security Council resolutions."|

Kasoulides met French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, Minister Delegate for European Affairs Noelle Lenoir and members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs at the French National Assembly and Senate.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island's northern third. The European Commission has decided that Cyprus, along with nine other candidate countries, can finalise accession negotiations by the end of the year.
