Clerides: Attention should remain focused on two major goals

Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has expressed the hope that with the unity on the home front, in consultation with Greece and in ooperation with the international community, Cyprus will achieve its two major causes: solution of its political problem and accession to the European Union.

In a speech Wednesday night during a gathering to honour him, President Clerides stressed that everybody's attention should stay focused on these two major goals.

He repeated his pledge not to proceed with unacceptable concessions on the Cyprus solution to secure the island's accession to the EU.|

''My sole personal ambition is the solution of the Cyprus problem and the EU accession of the island,'' President Clerides noted, adding that a solution should be based on UN Resolutions, human rights international conventions and the acquis communautaire.

''Such a solution would serve the benefits of both, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and would contribute to peace, security and political stability in the region,'', President Clerides added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

Cyprus is expected to finalise accession negotiations, according to the European Commission, by the end of the year.
