2002-11-08 15:34:02

By Nicos Bellos -- Brussels, Nov 8 (CNA) ? The European Commission is in constant touch with the UN Secretary-General and is informing him on the various aspects of the acquis communautaire, so that provisions of a solution plan are not contrary to the acquis communautaire.

Spokesman for Enlargement Commissioner, Jean-Christophe Filori told CAN the European Commission is "helping the UN Secretary-General and replies to all his questions so that the solution plan to be submitted will comply with the fundamental principles of the acquis communautaire".

Filori assured that Enlargement Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen "has not obtained, and naturally he does not hold a UN overall solution plan".|

The UN has been conducting peace talks on Cyprus since January with a view to find a comprehensive settlement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
