2002-11-11 09:36:08

Nicosia, Nov 11 (CNA) -- A two-member team from the special UN commission entrusted with disarming Iraq is in Cyprus to help set up a local office.

The officials from the UN Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) have been working on the logistics of setting up their branch in Cyprus, ahead of the expected arrival here of Hans Blix, the chief UN inspector.|

The local UNMOVIC office will probably be located near Larnaca International Airport to facilitate travel arrangements for its staff, estimated to be about ten persons.

The Cyprus Foreign Ministry and other government departments are at the disposal of the UN officers to offer any assistance they can to facilitate the opening and smooth running of the office.

The Cyprus office will be UNMOVIC's regional headquarters and provide a base for the inspectors who will be visiting Iraq.
