2002-11-11 09:48:18

By Nicos Bellos Brussels, Nov 11 (CNA) ? European Commission Enlargement Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, expects he will be notified on the solution plan, which the UN will present to the two sides in Cyprus later Monday.

Verheugen's Spokesman, Jean-Christophe Filori reiterated the European Commission considers crucial two points. First that Cyprus is able to talk with one voice within the European Union and in the international arena and secondly, the Cyprus state which will result from a possible agreement, to be functional and comply with the acquis communautaire and obligations EU member states have.

Filori clarified that the Commission did not have direct involvement in drafting the plan but provided its mission of good offices, in the context of clarifying points of the acquis communautaire following questions by the UN.|

The UN will submit a blueprint for a Cyprus settlement later Monday to the two sides on the island. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
