Brussels, Nov 12 (CNA) -- The European Commission and its President
Romano Prodi, have welcomed the UN Secretary-General's blueprint for a
Commission Spokesman Jonathan Faull said during the daily briefing that the Annan proposal is a significant step forward and an important framework for discussion, adding the EU hopes it will be crowned with success.|
The fact that the plan was submitted is a positive development and will have the full support of the European Commission and the European Union in general, Faull added.
The UN Secretary-General delivered, through his representatives, a 137-page plan to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on Monday and asked them to take some time to consider the document.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
