Nicosia, Nov 12 (CNA) ? US Ambassador in Nicosia, Michael Klosson, urged the two sides in Cyprus to study the UN settlement proposal carefully and to seize the opportunity for a comprehensive settlement.

In a statement on Monday's UN submission of the plan to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Klosson said that "time is short" and encouraged the "parties to work urgently with the UN Secretary General to achieve a settlement before the European Union makes its decisions on EU enlargement in December".

Klosson reiterated that this most recent development, makes it all the more clear that there is an historic opportunity to achieve a comprehensive settlement. |

The US, he added, strongly welcomes the initiative of the UN Secretary General to present a proposal for a comprehensive settlement for Cyprus to the two Cypriot leaders as the basis for an agreement.

Noting the US fully supports this step and the ongoing efforts by the SG, his Special Advisor, Alvaro de Soto, and the good offices mission to find a just and durable solution to the longstanding division of the island, the American Ambassador stressed that US President George W. Bush recently reiterated american support for the good offices mission in a letter to Annan.

"We urge the two sides to study the settlement proposal carefully, to provide their considered responses and to seize this opportunity to achieve a comprehensive settlement", Klosson said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
