Japan welcomes UN initiative on Cyprus settlement
Nicosia, Nov 13 (CNA) ? Japan has welcomed the initiative of the UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan to present a proposal on a comprehensive
settlement of the Cyprus problem.
A Foreign Ministry statement said Japan hopes that through dialogue between the two parties, the issue will be peacefully resolved at an early date.
"Japan welcomes the initiative of the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to present on November 11 to both Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders a proposal for a comprehensive settlement for the Cyprus problem", the statement said.
Noting that "Japan supports the UN Secretary-General's mission of good offices towards a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus problem", it "hopes that it will be peacefully resolved at an early date through dialogue between the two parties".|
Kofi Annan has asked President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to inform him by Monday 18 whether they accept his proposal as a basis for negotiations.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
