Annan: there is a real chance for settlement
2002-11-14 15:34:30

by Demetris Apokis Washington, Nov 14 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides to apply courage, vision and determination and seize the chance at this juncture to find a political settlement.

Speaking after a meeting with US President George Bush, he said Bush and other world leaders have offered to help the effort to reach a settlement and pointed out that a Cyprus solution would ensure a better future for the generations to come and improve Greco-Turkish relations as well as help Turkey's European aspirations.|

''I think the President, like all the leaders, is encouraged that the plan is out and we are all hoping that the leaders will seize this opportunity and resolve the Cyprus issue once and for all,'' he said.

''I do expect the President and is not just the President quite a lot of other leaders around the world have offer to help and I am sure the President will do everything he can to help us find a settlement on Cyprus,'' he added.

Annan said that there is really a chance for a settlement but it will require ''courage, vision and determination because they really have a chance to solve this thirty-year-old conflict and build a better future for their children and also improve relations between Greece and Turkey once and for all.''

''I also hope that a settlement of this issue would also be helpful for eventual entry of Turkey to the EU,'' the Secretary General said.

Kofi Annan gave President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash a proposal on the solution of Cyprus and asked them to say by Monday, 18 November, whether they accept it as a basis for negotiations on a comprehensive settlement.
