2002-11-26 17:31:18

Nicosia, Nov 26 (CNA) -- The UN is giving clarifications to the Greek Cypriot side on a proposal it has put forward to the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides with regard to a political settlement, Attorney General Alecos Markides said here today.

''We have reached a certain point and now we shall have to wait for the decisions of the National Council (the top advisory body to the President of the Cyprus question),'' Markides said after a meeting of a National Council subcommittee.

Replying to questions, he said many clarifications were given orally by the UN on specific issues and President Glafcos Clerides is subsequently informed about them.|

The National Council is due to meet on Thursday to continue its deliberations on the proposal Secretary General Kofi Annan gave the two sides on 11 November.

The Greek Cypriot side has said it would negotiate on the basis of the UN proposal. The Turkish Cypriot side has yet to reply.
