Powell sees historic opportunity on Cyprus
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday after talks with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou that a United Nations plan offers Greek and Turkish Cypriots a ``historic opportunity'' to reunite the island.
``I hope that both sides will respond in a way that allows the process to move forward,'' Powell said.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has submitted a plan for reunification of Cyprus and gave the two sides until Dec. 12 to accept it. If they agree, the united island could be welcomed into the European Union. Powell and Papandreou also talked about the possibility of the EU starting a process leading to Turkish membership in the EU. Papandreou said Greece ``has been upfront in saying that we would want to see a very positive message toward Turkey.'' He said Greece is looking for a specific date for the beginning of EU-Turkey accession discussions. Papandreou added that Greece detects important movement in Turkey for deepening democratic change and for protecting human rights. ***
