by Nicos Bellos--
Brussels, Dec 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus has closed one more chapter in its
accession negotiations, that of Agriculture, and it is expected to close the last
chapter, Budget, Tuesday.
Chief negotiator with the EU George Vasiliou said he was pleased with the agreed arrangements which meet Cyprus' goals since the Commission responded in a positive manner.|
On Agriculture, Cyprus will get a national subsidy to farmers for a transitional seven year period, it got permission to replant 2000 hectares of vineyards and will be able to produce annually 145.000 tons of cow milk.
Vasiliou said that on the Budget there was agreement on the basic principles of this chapter and negotiations are expected to be concluded today.
The closure of these two chapters signals the conclusion of the Republic's accession negotiations, which began in March 1998. The EU summit in Copenhagen next week is expected to invite Cyprus and another nine candidate countries to join the Union in 2004.
President Glafcos Clerides will represent Cyprus at the summit.
