Cyprus concludes accession negotiations
by Nicos Bellos --
Brussels, Dec 4 (CNA) -- Cyprus is the first of the EU candidate countries to
have concluded accession negotiations, after an agreement reached
regarding the chapter Budgetary and other Financial Provisions.
Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou had yesterday all day discussions with the EU Danish Presidency and the European Commission that wrapped up when they reached an overall agreement.
The final ratification of the conclusion of the negotiations will take place here at ministerial level, early next week, with the participation of Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.|
Cyprus had concluded Monday negotiations on the Chapter of Agriculture and Vasiliou said he was pleased with the agreed arrangements which meet Cyprus' goals since the Commission responded in a positive manner.
Cyprus opened accession negotiations with the EU in 1998. The EU summit in Copenhagen next week is expected to invite Cyprus and another nine candidate countries to join the Union in 2004.
