President sees Alvaro de Soto
Nicosia, Dec 9 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides had a long meeting today
with UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, as
part of fresh UN efforts to conclude an agreement prior to this week's
European Union summit in Copenhagen.
The meeting, attended by their respective aides to the UN-sponsored talks, lasted about 90 minutes.
No statements were made afterwards but de Soto, replying to questions, said he would be meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in early afternoon.|
On Sunday, the UN official had a two hour-long discussion with Denktash, the first encounter between the two men since the Turkish Cypriot leader returned to Cyprus on Saturday from New York, where he underwent heart surgery.
Intensive consultations between members of the three parties involved in this new phase of the peace effort (the UN, the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides) continued on the sidelines, as the two leaders meet de Soto.
On Sunday evening members of the de Soto team met with representatives of the two sides and this type of consultation is expected to continue as part of the negotiating process of proximity talks.
The negotiations entered a new phase after Clerides and Denktash gave the UN their comments, remarks and requests on a proposal Kofi Annan has submitted to the two sides relating to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.
