2002-12-09 11:09:01

by Apostolis Zoupaniotis-- United Nations, Dec 9 (CNA) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told CNA that the UN are working on a revised text of his Cyprus solution plan, which will be ready shortly.

Annan also said he does not have any plans to go to Copenhagen for the European Council, which will decide whether Cyprus and nine other candidate countries will join the EU ranks.

Replying to questions, Annan said the UN are ''working on'' his solution plan. ''We have got comments from both parties and we are looking at a revised text which I hope will be ready shortly. And we will share that with the parties'', he said.|

Asked if he intended to visit Copenhagen to attend the European Council, Annan said ''I have no plans as for today to go to Copenhagen''.

Annan's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and his team are meeting with representatives of the two sides and this type of consultation is expected to continue as part of the negotiating process of proximity talks.

The negotiations entered a new phase after Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash gave the UN their comments, remarks and requests on a proposal Kofi Annan has submitted to the two sides relating to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
