UN envoy informs Rasmussen on Cyprus efforts

by Maria Myles -- Copenhagen, Dec 13 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's special envoy for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has sent a letter to the president of the European Council, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmoussen with regard to the outcome of his efforts to have an agreement on a solution of the Cyprus problem signed.

Well-informed diplomatic sources told CNA here today that in his letter de Soto informs Rasmoussen about the course and the outcome of the consultations he has had with interested parties and in particular the Turkish Cypriot side, to whom he talked to today for about two hours.

In his letter, which came in response to a request by the current EU presidency to inform the European Council about the outcome of his efforts by 1630 local time today, the UN envoy outlines his own assessment of the situation with regard the consultations he has had in Copenhagen.|

The draft conclusions include two options, one refers to Cyprus' accession to the EU with a political settlement and another without a settlement.
