2002-12-16 13:08:37

by Kyriacos Tsioupras London, Dec 16 (CNA) - The Foreign Office has welcomed the fact that efforts for a Cyprus settlement will continue.

Invited by CNA to comment on the decision of the Copenhagen European Council on Cyprus, a Foreign Office Spokesperson repeated the British government's support to the UN Secretary General's proposals for a settlement.|

''Although we are disappointed that a political solution had not been reached, we welcome the fact efforts will continue for a settlement'', the Spokesperson said.

He added that ''we strongly support the UN Secretary General's proposals as the basis for an agreement''.

The European Council on Friday decided to extend an invitation to Cyprus to join the European Union.

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.
