Clerides to proclaim presidential elections on January 3rd
2002-12-18 09:55:56

Nicosia, Dec 18 (CNA) ? President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides will proclaim on January 3, 2003 presidential elections for February 16 and the 23rd, if there is a second round, said Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou.

He also said the President had asked Interior Minister Andreas Panagiotou whether the ministry is ready for the elections, as provided by the Constitution, on January 3rd and the minister replied positively. Candidacies for the presidential elections will be submitted on January 17.|

Asked if President Clerides has decided to contest the elections, Papapetrou said he had not talked about this with the President.

"The President dealt solely with the agenda of today's Council of Ministers meeting", Papapetrou added.

Asked if negotiations for a Cyprus settlement can take place during the pre- election campaign, Papapetrou said this was possible, unless the National Council, the top advisory body on the handling of the Cyprus question to the President, decided otherwise.

However, he said, no such issue had been raised so far.
