Kasoulides criticises Denktash demands
Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) ? Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said if Turkish
Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash maintains a policy, which supports partition,
then under no circumstances the Cyprus problem can be solved.
Speaking before his departure to Athens where he will be decorated by Athens Municipality, Kasoulides also hoped that Serdar Denktash, who was on Sunday elected president of the Democratic Party in the Turkish occupied north, will express the policy of the new generation and will not embrace the policy which his father, Rauf Denktash is following.
Asked about the Turkish Cypriots' reaction in the north against the Denktash policy, Kasoulides said it increases "our obligations towards the Turkish Cypriot community."
"We must show that we are responding to the feelings of our T/C compatriots who wish reconciliation, unification and accession," he said.|
Commenting on the conditions, which Rauf Denktash has placed in order to agree to a solution to the Cyprus problem by 28 February, Kasoulides said that if this is the policy, which will be placed before the UN, and the Greek Cypriot sides during the talks then there are no prospects for a solution.
Asked if the Denktash policy expresses Ankara's policy, Kasoulides said it is uncertain which side the "tug-of-war" between the old and new in Turkey favours, and "since the situation is unclear, Denktash feels he has the backing to continue his intransigent policy".
In an interview, Denktash demanded a change to the maps under the UN Secretary-General's solution plan, permanent co-presidency, and a strict bizonal state, without the return of refugees, in order to agree to a solution to the Cyprus problem by 28th February
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan put forward a revised peace plan last month aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
