2002-12-30 11:37:09

Paphos, Dec 30 (CNA) ? Cyprus authorities are taking all necessary measures to ensure that the crisis that has errupted in the island's Turkish occupied does not spill over into the southern government controlled areas of the Republic, Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos has said.

Referring to the theft of military equipment from camps in the occupied areas, Hasikos said the occupation forces themselves were responsible for the theft of military hardware.|

"For the first time the Turkish occupation forces are more interested in the occupied part of Cyprus than the areas controlled by the government", the minister added.

Turkish Cypriots have been demonstrating in their thousands in occupied Cyprus demanding the resignation of their long-time leader Rauf Denktash and seeking a political settlement on the basis of UN proposals. They are also demanding the accession of a reunited Cyprus to the European Union.

Hasikos was speaking during a ceremony where he laid the foundation stone of a monument at the site where the late National Guard Commander Evangelos Florakis and four other officers were killed on July 10 when their helicopter crashed on its way to Paphos air base, on the west coast.
