Presidential elections set for February 16

Nicosia, Jan 3 (CNA) -- Presidential elections were proclaimed here Friday for February 16, 2003, with a run-off, if necessary, a week later while January 17 is the last day for candidates to submit their bids.

Kyriakos Triantafyllides, Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, was appointed Chief Returning Officer while Assistant Returning Officer is George Theodorou, head of the Central Electoral Service.|

"Following today's decree" published in the Official Gazette, "the final register of voters was made public" at the local voting districts, Central Electoral Service Officer Demetris Demetriou told CNA.

The register will remain in public for ten days for possible objections and after that, they will become final and incorporated in the permanent registry.

The final register will be ready on January 13 and will include 8,000 new voters. Some 475.000 people are registered to vote.
