2003-01-15 10:22:27

by Apostolis Zoupaniotis-- United Nations, Jan 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus emerges as the likely coordinating centre for relief operations, in case of a war against Iraq, a UN official here told CNA.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonimity, said the issue was discussed during a meeting in Geneva, at the initiative of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Diplomatic sources said the UN are pleased with the support Cyprus provides to the UN inspectors currently working in Iraq and noted the fact that Cyprus, apart from its geographical position and other technical facilities, maintains excellent relations with the parties involved in the Iraqi issue.|

Cyprus has accepted the setting up of a regional office by the UN inspectors to Iraq to facilitate their travel arrangements.
