Statement from Republic of Cyprus Ambassador Pavlos Anastasiades
The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in the USA, H.E. Mr Pavlos Anastasiades, commends Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) for drafting the Cyprus provisions which are part of the Global Partnerships Act of 2012. Rep. Berman is a tireless champion of finding a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus question, and the provisions he has drafted make clear that crafting a settlement is a “high priority” for the United States. The legislation details the conditions which must be established to re-unify Cyprus based on a “ bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with a single sovereignty…” The legislation also calls on the United States to “use its influence to achieve the withdrawal of Turkish military forces from Cyprus and to effect an end to Turkey’s illegal transfer of its citizens to Cyprus.” This is a goal not just important to Cyprus but to the freedom and stability of the region as a whole.
We applaud Rep. Berman for his decades long service to Congress and his leadership role on Cyprus.
