Acquisition of Citizenship

Acquisition of Cypriot Citizenship 

 Applications for the acquisition of Cypriot citizenship maybe submitted to the Civil Registry and Migration Department, the District Administration Offices and the diplomatic missions of the Republic  of Cyprus(embassies and consulates). Subsequently, all the applications are processed by the Citizenship Section of the Civil Registry and Migration Department.

NOTE

The accompanying documents of all the applications should be duly authenticated, i.e. they should bear the stamp «APOSTILE», if they are issued by countries that have signed the Hague Convention, otherwise they should be sealed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country and the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Cyprus in the issuing country

ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP DUE TO CYPRIOT ORIGINS

 

The types of applications for the acquisition of the Cypriot citizenship due to Cypriot origin as well as their accompanying documents are the following:

 

MINORS (UNDER THE AGE OF 18)

 

Application for Consular Birth Certificate (type M121)

 

It can be submitted by either minors or adults (above the age of 18), who were born abroad after the 16th of August 1960 and whose father at the time of birth was a Cypriot citizen, and by individuals born after the 11th of June 1999, whose mother was a Cypriot citizen at the time of their birth.

 

Accompanying documents:

 

· Birth certificate of the applicant

· Marriage certificate of the applicant's parents

· Photocopy of the applicant's and the applicant's parents' passports

· Certificate of registration of the Cypriot parent (where applicable)

· Copy of proof of fees paid 20 euros

· stamp worth 8.54 euros attached to the application

 

PLEASE NOTE that all public documents issued abroad must:

a) bear an official translation into Greek or English from Press and Information Office.

b) Be certified with APOSTILLE if the country has signed the Hague Convention of 1961 or

- Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then by the Embassy/Consulate of Cyprus in his country or

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the Embassy / Consulate of his country in Cyprus and then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

- In the instance that the country of origin of the applicant has not signed the Hague Convention of 1961and there is no Embassy /Consulate in the above mentioned country the documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the nearest Embassy / Consulate which is accredited to Cyprus

 

Application for the Registration of Minors (type M126)

 

It can be submitted for minors, who were born prior to the 11th of June 1999 in Cyprus or abroad and whose mother is a Cypriot citizen and father a foreigner or for minors whose father acquired the Cypriot citizenship after their birth.

 

Additionally the application can be submitted for minors, whose father or mother acquired the Cypriot citizenship by Naturalization or by Registration due to marriage with a Cypriot citizen.

 

Accompanying documents:

 

· Birth certificate of applicant

· Marriage certificate of applicant’s parents

· Photocopy of the applicant's and the applicant’s parents’ passports

· Certificate of acquisition of the Cypriot citizenship of the Cypriot parent (where applicable)

· Declaration of the foreign parent signed before an officer of the District Administration Office or the diplomatic authority consenting to the granting of the Cypriot citizenship to minor child. The statement is not required if the Cypriot parent had obtained a court decision for sole parental care of the minor. A copy of the relevant court decision should be attached.

· Photocopy of receipt for the amount of 80 euros paid as fees

· A stamp of 8.54 euro placed on the application

· Two photographs (passport size)

 

The applications for children of Cypriot citizens that have acquired the citizenship by Naturalization or by Registration due to marriage with a Cypriot citizen the following should be additionally attached:

 

· Certificate of Registration or Naturalization of Cypriot parent

· Copy of certificate of school attendance at school

· Photocopy of valid temporary residence permit for the child

 

PLEASE NOTE that all public documents issued abroad must:

a) bear an official translation into Greek or English from Press and Information Office.

b) Be certified with APOSTILLE if the country has signed the Hague Convention of 1961 or

- Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then by the Embassy/Consulate of Cyprus in his country or

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the Embassy / Consulate of his country in Cyprus and then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

- In the instance that the country of origin of the applicant has not signed the Hague Convention of 1961and there is no Embassy /Consulate in the above mentioned country the documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the nearest Embassy / Consulate which is accredited to Cyprus

 

ADULTS (ABOVE THE AGE 18)

 

 

Application type M71

 

It can be submitted by persons born prior to the 16th of August 1960, who are citizens of the United Kingdom and its former colonies, who originate from Cyprus form the male side and reside permanently abroad.

 

Application type M72

 

It can be submitted by persons born prior to the 16th of August 1960, who are not citizens of the United Kingdom and its former colonies and who originate from Cyprus form the male side.

 

 

Accompanying documents:

 

· Birth certificate of applicant

· Birth certificate of applicant’s father

· Photocopy of applicant’s passport

· Photocopy of receipt for the amount of 20 euros paid as fees

· A stamp of 1.71 euro placed on the application

 

PLEASE NOTE that all public documents issued abroad must:

a) bear an official translation into Greek or English from Press and Information Office.

b) Be certified with APOSTILLE if the country has signed the Hague Convention of 1961 or

- Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then by the Embassy/Consulate of Cyprus in his country or

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the Embassy / Consulate of his country in Cyprus and then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

- In the instance that the country of origin of the applicant has not signed the Hague Convention of 1961and there is no Embassy /Consulate in the above mentioned country the documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the nearest Embassy / Consulate which is accredited to Cyprus

 

 

Application type M123

 

 

It can be submitted by adults who were born on the 16th of August 1960 or after and none of their parents at the date of their birth was a Cypriot citizen.

 

Additionally it can be submitted by adults who were born after the 16th of August 1960 and originate from a person, who became a British citizen based on the Annexation of Cyprus Orders in Council 1914 to 1943 or a person born in Cyprus after the 5th of November 1914 and prior to the 16th of August 1960.

 

 

Accompanying documents:

 

· Birth certificate of the applicant

· Marriage certificate of the applicants parents

· Photocopy of the applicant's and the applicant's parents' passports

· Certificate of registration of the Cypriot parent (where applicable)

· Copy of proof of fees paid 50 euros

· The application should be submitted in duplicate and one of the two application forms should bear two stamps worth 8.54 euros.

 

PLEASE NOTE that all public documents issued abroad must:

a) bear an official translation into Greek or English from Press and Information Office.

b) Be certified with APOSTILLE if the country has signed the Hague Convention of 1961 or

- Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then by the Embassy/Consulate of Cyprus in his country or

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the Embassy / Consulate of his country in Cyprus and then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

- In the instance that the country of origin of the applicant has not signed the Hague Convention of 1961and there is no Embassy /Consulate in the above mentioned country the documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the nearest Embassy / Consulate which is accredited to Cyprus

 

 

 

ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP AS A SPOUSE OF A CYPRIOT CITIZEN (TYPE M125)

 

These applications can be submitted by foreign spouses of Cypriot nationals, who have completed three years of marriage and two years of residence in the Republic prior to the date of application (For spouses of overseas Cypriots please see last paragraph).

 

Accompanying documents:

 

· Birth certificate of the applicant

· Certificate of clean criminal record of the applicant

· Marriage certificate

· Birth certificate of the couple’s children

· Photocopy of the applicant’s passport

· Photocopy of the Cypriot spouse’s passport

· Certificate of acquisition of the Cypriot citizenship of the Cypriot spouse (where applicable)

· Statement of harmonious cohabitation signed before an Officer of the District Administration Office or the diplomatic authority

· Statement of cohabitation from the local authority

· The application should be submitted in duplicate and one of the two application forms should bear two stamps worth 8.54 euros.

· Photocopy of receipt for the amount of 300 euros paid as fees

 

Application for acquisition of citizenship can be submitted by spouses of overseas Cypriots after they have completed at least three years of marriage. These applications must additionally be accompanied by a letter from the couple stating the reasons for requesting the grant of the Cypriot citizenship to the foreign spouse. If the couple has completed at least five years of marriage and has at least one child, it is not necessary to attach the aforementioned letter.

- Certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then by the Embassy/Consulate of Cyprus in his country or

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the Embassy / Consulate of his country in Cyprus and then certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus.

- In the instance that the country of origin of the applicant has not signed the Hague Convention of 1961and there is no Embassy /Consulate in the above mentioned country the documents must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin of the applicant and then the nearest Embassy / Consulate which is accredited to Cyprus

 


Note: All the above applications can be attained upon request from the Consulate office of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington, DC or the Consulate-General in New York.
