Biographical note of His Excellency Andreas Kakouris

His Excellency Andreas Kakouris presented his credentials as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States, to President George W. Bush on December 8 2006. Ambassador Kakouris is concurrently accredited as High Commissioner of Cyprus to Canada.

Mr. Kakouris is the former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland (2002-2006). Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Ireland he held the position of the Director of the Political Affairs Division (Multilateral Affairs), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cyprus (2000-2002) during which time he represented Cyprus to the European Union – Associate Countries Political Directors Meetings and was the Senior Official for the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.

Andreas Kakouris’ long diplomatic path includes significant posts such as that of the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington D.C. (1996-2000), as well as serving at the Permanent Delegation of Cyprus to the EC/Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Brussels (1992-1996).

His initial experience at the Political Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cyprus (1989-1992), had followed his position as the Consulate-General, in New York (1984-1988). In New York, he was concurrently accredited to the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations.

Ambassador Kakouris’ career is also highlighted by his representations of Cyprus in numerous international conferences. He was a Delegate to successive UN General Assembly sessions from 1984 to 1992, during which period he covered Fourth Committee (decolonization), Second Committee (economic) and First Committee (disarmament) issues.

He began his education at the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom, where he was an honors graduate with a Bachelor Degree in Politics (1981). Moreover, he is a holder of a Masters Degree in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School International Affairs of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada (1982). Ambassador Kakouris was born in the United Kingdom (1960) and is married to Kareen Farrell Kakouris with two children, Stephen and Andreana.
